Our church is a member of the National Assemblies of God, a denomination committed to reaching the world for Jesus Christ.
About 12 people gathered in 1937 and started tent meetings in the Hollywood area of Memphis. In 1938, they bought the land and started plans to build a church.
In April 1939, they had grown to 30 members and chartered the Hollywood Assembly of God Church. These members constructed a basement church where Rev. W.E. Lindsey served as the first pastor. First, a two story educational building was built. The fellowship hall served as a temporary sanctuary until 1965 when the first sanctuary building was completed which had seating for 280. 1965, J.D. Middlebrook was elected pastor. Under his 35 years of ministry, the church grew in attendance from 140 to over 1000. In 1971, a new sanctuary was built seating 700. An educational wing was added in 1974 and an office wing in 1975. In 1976, the church purchased five additional acres and constructed the Family Life Center. In 1985, the present sanctuary seating 2500 was built. During the years following, Raleigh Assembly of God became one of the great missions churches in our fellowship with world missions giving topping $350,000 in 2000. Until Jesus comes, Raleigh Assembly of God will continue to reach out to this city and the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ! |
